Making India proud, Chandigarh-based Tarini Goyal and her sister Arunima Goyal cornered glory and grabbed gold medals in their respective categories in the Asian Youth Invitational Chess Championship and Asian Youth Challengers Chess Championship, at Beijing which was held from July 8 to 15.

Tarini Goyal, student of Class IV of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sector 26 Chandigarh, teamed up with Tejaswani Sagar of Maharashtra and Riya Savant of Goa to bag gold for India. During the nine-round game, Tarini just lost one game while she beat players from China, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan and drew with players from Vietnam, Kazakhistan and India's silver medalist Riya Savant. In the process she also beat the last year's Under-8 World champion Chu Routang of China.

While playing in a parallel tournament, the Asian Youth Challengers Chess Championship, her elder sister Arunima Goyal also from the same school, bagged the gold medal in the Under-14 category and was declared the champion in this category. This feat now entitles Arunima to receive the title of Asian Master to be awarded by the Asian Chess Federation.

In her nine rounds, Arunima also just lost one round to the top seed Wang Yiye of China, while she beat or drew with six players from China and beat the Mongolian player Odgerel Jargalmaa in the other rounds. Having bagged six points, she beat Wang Shiyi of China in a tie break to lift the gold medal.

Vipnesh Bhardwaj, joint secretary, All India Chess Association and secretary of Chandigarh Chess Association (CCA) congratulated both Tarini and Arunima on their success. Appreciating them, Bhardwaj said they have brought Chandigarh on the international chess scene.
