On the eve of the Santosh Trophy final, both Bengal and Punjab coaches condemned the All India Football Federation (AIFF), voicing concerns over the gruelling tournament itinerary. While Bengal coach Sabbir Ali said that the schedule has taken such a toll on his players ahead of the final, such that his side is left with only 15 fit players, Punjab coach Jagir Singh believes that his job has become tougher over the days of the tournament, due to discontent in the camp.
"It is inhuman to play five matches in eight days and that too in this heat and humidity. More thought should be given before preparing the itinerary of a tournament like the Santosh Trophy. At the moment, I am left with just one striker in Robin Singh. We won't start as favourites due to this," Ali said.
His counterpart was more vocal. "They (AIFF) just squeeze this tournament in the calendar without giving a thought to football matters. Our associations are yet to become professional," a disappointed Singh said. The Punjab coach, however, is confident of winning the final. "We are not under pressure. In fact, it's better that we are playing away from home. Nowadays people don't come to Santosh Trophy matches, so Bengal won't have the home advantage," he said. Except for Gurpreet Singh's unavailability, who is out suspended, Punjab have a full-strength squad to take on the hosts.
