Hosts IMED Pune won the boy's title, while the Bharati Vidyapeeth Law College lifted the girls' title at the Inter-College Table Tennis Tournament conducted by IMED at the Sharada Sports Center yesterday. The tournament was organised by the Bharati Vidyapeeth University, and featured over 85 players from 17 of its institutes.
In the boys' final, IMED cruised to an easy victory, blanking the Bharati Vidyapeeth Engineering College 3-0.
Rishiraj Bhosale defeated Rosel Khare quite easily in the first match, beating him by a score of 11-4, 11-4, 13-11 to give IMED the upperhand.
His teammate Rehan Kulkarni recovered after losing the first set to overcome Harish Balana 5-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 and give his team a 2-0 overall lead. Needing to win the last match to provide IMED with an entry into the final round, Amulya Sharma came through, beating Vinit Varma in straight sets. Sharma beat his opponent 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 to settle the tie.
The girls' final, The Bharati Vidyapeeth Law College were made to sweat for victory by the Ayurvedic Medical College, Pune, with the match going all the way to the deciding set.
Girima Yadav got the eventual champions off to a good start by defeating Sujata Gunjal 10-12, 11-6, 11-7 to give the Law College the upper hand.
However, Ayurvedic Medical College bounced back immediately, with their player Snehal Jadhav blanking Isha Gandhi 11-3, 11-7 to bring them level.
Surbhi Mehra ensured that the Law College pulled into the lead yet again, thrashing Sushma Yadav 11-2, 11-3 as the match score read 2-1 in their favour.
Jadhav came to the rescue yet again for the Ayurvedic Medical College, overcoming Girima Yadav 11-3, 11-7 in the first reverse singles to make it 2-2 and send the match into a decider. However, her valiant efforts went in vain as Gandhi ultimately ensured that Law College emerged victorious, winning the final rubber 11-8, 11-2 to help them be crowned champions.
