An electrician with the sports department here was bashed up by the visiting Manipur sepak takraw team on Wednesday after he allegedly sneaked into the women's dormitory at the Nehru Stadium and tried to take pictures of the players. The irate Manipur team, who were participating in the 21st national senior sepak takraw championship that concluded on Wednesday, then went on a rampage and damaged the stadium property, according to a state sports official.
"The women players caught hold of one Phulkumar Das at around 4 AM and beat him up," said state sports director Sanjib Gohain Baruah. "They initialy refused to hand him over to the police and went on a rampage and damaged property inside the stadium complex," he said.
Said Guwahati City SSP PK Saloi: "We have registered two cases, one filed by the Manipur team and the other by the state sports department which owns the Nehru Stadium."
The Manipur team, which was to take part in the finals today, initially wanted to pull out of the tournament. It was only after the organising committee tendered an apology and announced an inquiry into the incident that they withdrew the boycott. Manipur emerged as the best team in the championship with as many as three gold medals, including winning the women's championship.
