When tennis was set to make its debut at CWG, India had assured itself of at least three gold medals from Somdev Devvarman in the singles, the winning combination of Leander Paes-Mahesh Bhupathi, and Paes-Mirza partnership. While the first two medal hopes are still on track, Paes-Mirza have exited the mixed doubles' event in the biggest upset of the competition so far a 7-5 6-4 loss at the hands of unseeded Scots Colin Fleming and Jocelyn Rae.
While Sania had a good break after her singles' match in the morning, Paes had to play two back to back matches after he had partnered Bhupathi earlier. Fatigue caught on to Paes as he did not move as much, and Sania too did not come in to the net at many crucial points. Sania's serve which was broken once each in the two sets worsened matters and they hardly looked like the 2006 Asian Games gold medallists.
Paes's mixed doubles loss came after he had pulled off a stunning win partnering Bhupathi in the men's doubles quarter-final. The euphoria at their 6-2 6-7 (4) 7-6 (4)win defined the proceedings of the whole match.
The clash between their experience and the Englishmen James Ward and Josh Goodall's energy brought out many moments of heated banter and high-decibel yells giving the Indian spectators a few anxious moments in the process before moving in to the semi-finals.
