Booed by fans but Tanzanian boxer still likes it in India

    Fri, Oct 8 02:45 PM

New Delhi, Oct 8 (PTI) He was booed by the partisan crowd and felt a bit hard done by the judging in his loss to Indian boxer Jai Bhagwan in the Commonwealth Games pre-quarterfinals but Tanzania''s Nasser Mafuru has no complaints because he thinks grumbling is against the sportsman spirit. The Tanzanian was unlucky not to get points on some clear punches he landed on the Indian in his 2-11 loss but he took the defeat in his stride, giving a warm hug to Jai once the bout was over.

The fact that his was not as bad a performance as it seemed from the scoreline was underlined when Indian coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu embraced him at the end of the statutory three rounds. All smiles despite the loss, Mafuru said he didn''t mind the crowd''s boos and in fact was overwhelmed to see such strong support for the home pugilists.

"It''s OK, these things happen. I know I fought well.

I liked that the crowd got behind the Indian guy. It has been nice here," said the 25-year-old, who is a national champion back home.

Mafuru was slightly upset with the scoring but does not plan to protest because he feels "these things happen in sports." "I am not satisfied with the scoring because I didn''t get points for some very clear punches but this is a game and it happens.

He (Jai) is a good boxer," he said. "After all, sportsman spirit is also something.

So one should not complain," he signed off after once again shaking hands with Jai.
