Groin injury scratches Capirossi from Australian GP

    Sun, Oct 17 08:19 AM

Suzuki rider Loris Capirossi has withdrawn from Sunday's Australian Grand Prix after injuring his groin in a crash during qualifying.

The Italian veteran was thrown from his bike when following American Yamaha rider Colin Edwards on Saturday and had been declared unfit to race after medical examinations, the MotoGP tour's website (www.motogp.com) said.

The injury continues a difficult month for the Italian, who was forced to retire at the last two rounds in Malaysia and Japan due to mechanical failures.

"It has been quite a miserable three races for me and now I need to get back home and make sure I am as fit as possible for the last two races," Capirossi said.

The Italian joins Dani Pedrosa on the sidelines after the Spaniard also decided to withdraw following qualifying.

Pedrosa, who broke his collarbone in a crash at the Japan round, said the injury was still troubling him during qualifying.

The race starts at 4 p.m. (0500 GMT) local time.
