India were 146 for five in the second innings at stumps on day two of the first Test against South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Combined with the first innings lead of 165 runs, India lead by 311 runs at the close of the day's play with VVS Laxman and M S Dhoni unbeaten on 42 and 17, respectively.
But day two will be remembered for the wicket-fest at the Wanderers. As many as 20 wickets tumbled and for once the Proteas felt the heat from the Indian pace battery.
The day also saw S Sreesanth picking up his maiden five-wicket haul, Shaun Pollock reaching the 400 Test wickets mark and Sourav Ganguly notching up his 26th Test fifty to help India to a respectable 249 in the first innings.
India stutter
After bowling out South Africa for 84 in the first innings, their lowest Test score against India and since coming back into the international fold in 1992, the visitors stuttered at the start of their second essay.
Wasim Jaffer?s indifferent run continued and he was caught by Graeme Smith off a Andre Nel delivery for four.
Indian captain Rahul Dravid became Shaun Pollock's 400th Test victim when he was caught behind by Mark Boucher for one. Virender Sehwag lived dangerously for his 33.
He was caught by Herschelle Gibbs off a Andre Nel delivery. Pollock then picked up the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar, bowled for 14.
Sourav Ganguly and Laxman put on 58 runs for the fifth wicket before the southpaw got a faint edge off a Makhaya Ntini delivery to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.
Sultan of swing
Earlier, Sreesanth wrecked South Africa as the hosts were bowled out for 84 runs.
The Proteas scoreboard read more like a telephone number as the Indian pacers led by Sreesanth inflicted damage after damage and wrapped up the innings in just 25.1 overs.
The Kerala pace spearhead picked up the wickets of Graeme Smith (5) and Hashim Amla (0) before lunch. Zaheer Khan gave him support at the other end dismissing Herschelle Gibbs for naught.
In the first over after lunch, Sreesanth sent back Jacques Kallis, caught at slip by Laxman for 12. Soon after, Zaheer Khan sent back Abraham de Villiers, caught by Sehwag for six.
Sreesanth then bowled Mark Boucher and trapped Pollock lbw to finish with figures of 10-3-40-5.
Ashwell Prince and Andre Nel put on 39 runs for the eighth wicket before Anil Kumble had Prince (24) caught behind by M S Dhoni. The leggie bowled Makhaya Ntini for a golden duck with the next ball and VRV Singh picked up the last wicket, Andre Nel caught by Zaheer for 21.
Ganguly fires
Earlier, resuming on the overnight score of 156 for five, India posted 249, thanks mainly to Ganguly's unbeaten 51 and his 44-run partnership with No. 11 VRV Singh.
The duo put on 44 runs from just 5.5 overs and Ganguly, who had walked into the middle after the fall of Rahul Dravid?s wicket on Friday, top scored for the team.
VRV Singh also chanced his arm after arriving to the crease with the score reading 204 for nine. He was caught by Shaun Pollock off his own bowling for 29 runs, which included six hits to the ropes.
In the morning, India had lost the wickets of Dhoni (5), Anil Kumble (6) and Zaheer Khan (9).
