NBA - League approves modifications to instant replay rules

    Fri, Oct 22 06:56 AM

The NBA's board of governors has approved several modifications to the instant replay rules for use during the 2010-11 season, the league said Thursday.

Referees will be allowed to review the last two minutes of regulation, and the entire overtime period, to decide if the ball touched the rim and whether the shot clock should be adjusted.

Officials can also use replays to review out-of-bounds calls, to determine which player should attempt a free throw after a foul and to decide whether a call for a clear-path-to-the basket foul should stand.

Instant replays were initially implemented by the NBA before the 2002-03 season to review last second shots and fouls at the end of each period.

With this year's modifications, the league now uses 11 different triggers for instant replay review.
