American Peter Uihlein has been presented with the 2010 Mark H. McCormack Medal in honour of his status as the world's number one amateur.
The 21-year-old cemented his place at the top of the rankings by clinching the U.S. amateur championship in August with a 4&2 victory over compatriot David Chung.
"This is pretty special, it ranks right up there with winning the U.S. amateur," Uihlein said after receiving the award from Royal & Ancient chairman Allan Gormly before this week's world amateur team championship in Argentina.
"To join the list of gentlemen who have won previously is an honour."
Uihlein is the fourth recipient of the award, following fellow American Colt Knost (2007), New Zealand's Danny Lee (2008) and Canadian Nick Taylor (2009).
A junior at Oklahoma State University, Uihlein has produced a sizzling run of form over the last 12 months.
He was a member of the triumphant 2009 U.S. Walker Cup team, earning four points out of four against Britain and Ireland at Merion, before going on to win the Ping-Golfweek Preview in September and the Dixie Amateur title in December.
This year, the Florida resident has claimed the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional, the Sahalee Players Championship and the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational.
He has been ranked the world's number one amateur for a total of 21 weeks.
