Kolkata, Nov 11 (PTI) Mohammedan Sporting today unveiled former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly as brand ambassador of their Platinum Jubilee Cup here. The four-team competition is being held to commemorate platinum jubilee of Mohammedan Sporting''s first winning of IFA league title in 1934.
Mohammedan Sporting is the first Indian club to win this prestigious title. The teams involved in this competition are Mohammedan Sporting, Sheffield FC from England, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.
Club Chairman Sultan Ahmed, while announcing Ganguly''s maiden nomination for a football club said, "It is a great honour for Mohammedan Sporting that the Icon of Bengal is now a part of Mohammedan Sporting." Ganguly said, "It is a great honour to be a part of Mohammedan Sporting and I hope to be on the ground and play some good football.
This is a soccer crazy city and it is a great privilege to be playing the game before the crowd here." The former Indian cricket captain who loves soccer and used to play the game during his school days in St Xavier''s, said he would prefer to play in the forward position.
"I like to be in the field early and continue as long as I can. However, this would depend on our coach," he said.
Ganguly will don the number 99. "Numbers on the shirt don''t matter.
What matters is the number I score," Ganguly said. Speaking on the occasion Richard Tims, Chairman of Sheffield FC, said, "I have been to Mumbai two years back and when I got the invitation this time I really wanted the boys to come here and enjoy the football and culture of this great country.
" A special cover was released by the club in presence Chief Post Master general S K Chakrabarti. The first match between Sheffield FC and Mohun Bagan will be played at 3 pm at Salt lake Stadium followed by the match between Mohammedan Sporting and East Bengal at 6pm.
The final will be played on Sunday.
