Warne is retiring from Test Cricket

Warne is retiring from Test Cricket

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sydney Morning Herald, 20 Dec, 6:43 pm AEST)

Australia's greatest cricketer of the modern era, Shane Warne, will announce his retirement from international cricket tomorrow, effective from the end of the Sydney Test.

Warne will almost certainly take his 700th Test wicket at his home ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, during the forthcoming Boxing Day Test. It is thought that Warne viewed this as fitting way to close the book on one of the most celebrated, and controversial, careers of all-time.

Warne, 37, is Test cricket's leading wicket-taker and in 2000 was named one of Wisden's five cricketers of the century.

Glenn McGrath, 36, is also tipped to announce his retirement after the Sydney Test - although the likelihood is that he would play on through the World Cup in the Carribean.

The news Australian cricket fans have dreaded comes on the heels of 35-year-old batsman Damien Martyn's surprise retirement, while Justin Langer, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden are all over 35.

Warne is expected to accept a position on the Channel Nine commentary team after the Sydney Test.

Warne's career has been blighted by a number of sex scandals, a bookmaking controversy and a positive drug test, for which he served a 12-month suspension.

Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said it was up to Warne and McGrath to make any announcements regarding their futures.

"Those two players are the masters of their own destiny and the owners of their own futures and when they announce decisions on their futures is up to them."

Young said he was not in a position to say whether McGrath or Warne had contacted Cricket Australia.
