When the Indian Open gets underway on December 2, Daniel Chopra, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour in the United States hopes to make it a happy homecoming at the Delhi Golf Club. Though the Swedish-born golfer of Indian origin grew up learning the game at the DGC, he last won a tournament in India in 1994 and is hoping his home ground will turn the year around for him.
"I am always excited to come back to India and to Delhi Golf Club where I grew up playing golf. I always look forward to seeing all my old friends in Delhi and my mates on Tour," Chopra, who also turns 37 in December, said.
The 47th edition of the Indian Open carries a purse of $ 1.25 million and is an Asian Tour event. Asia and India's leading golfers including Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal and Jyoti Randhawa are among those who will tee off next week. While Ryder Cup star Paul McGinley has also confirmed participation, the defending champion India's Chinnaswamy Muniyappa will look to retain the title.
Chopra has two wins on the PGA Tour the Ginn Sur Mer Classic and the Mercedes Benz Championship besides two more on Nationwide and one on Asian Tour. "It would be nice to add an Indian Open title to that," he said. "I have no real expectations for the event and I am just going to go out and play as hard as I can and hopefully end the year in style," he added.
Chopra has been off-colour this season. "I have struggled with my game with too many swing changes and technical aspects and forgetting about just going out and playing and enjoying the game but in the last few weeks I've been working with a new coach and really simplifying things and am starting to feel good about my game again."
And Chopra has only been able to begin concentrating completely on his game after putting his injury woes behind him: "Thankfully I seem to have finally recovered from the nagging elbow injury that has hampered my ability to practice and play at my best for almost half the year."
"After a disappointing year, it is a way to end the year by coming to India and playing at one of my favorite courses," he said.
