New Delhi, Dec 3 (IANS) India's premier discus thrower Krishna Poonia wants to better her Asian Games throw by two metres, which she thinks will suffice for a podium finish in the 2012 London Olympics.
Poonia won the the bronze at the Guangzhou Asian Games with a throw of 61.94m and improved her gold medal show of 61.51m in the Delhi Commonwealth Games. She is now eying the 64m bracket for a medal in the Olympics.
'I could not throw 64m plus in China as I was battling with a knee injury. I am still recovering from the injury and will resume training in January,' Poonia told IANS.
'I am not looking at the 66m mark but 64 is very much achievable. If you look back at Beijing Olympics, the gold medal winner threw 64.74m. So, that is what I am aiming at.'
The 29-year-old from Rajasthan feels she does not need a foreign coach for improving her performance.
'My husband is the best coach for me and I do not feel I need anyone else. I am only looking forward to get back to fitness and start training,' she said.
However, despite the recent success, Poonia has failed to attract sponsors.
'It is a known fact that if you have to perform at the highest level, the backing of sponsors is crucial. Nobody has approached me so far but I hope someone will extend a helping hand soon,' she said.
The rivalry of current World Champion Dani Samuels of Australia and Poonia made headlines after the Commonwealth Games. The Indian accepted Dani's challenge of $20,000 winner takes all contest in January and would be competing in May-June.
'I have peaked for this year and I will not be fit till January. I have spoken to Dani regarding this and we will surely fight it out in the middle of next year.'
