Shillong, Dec 5 (PTI) Coinciding with the bombing of the US naval base at Pearl Harbour in 1941 by the Imperial Japanese Navy, 33 jeeps used during World War II will hit the roads of Nagaland to drive home a message on the futility of war. Three members of the Antique Wheel of the North East (AWNE) from Shillong will participate at the upcoming ''Second World War Vehicle Peace Rally'' from Dimapur to Kohima to be held on December 7.
AWNE secretary Ashoke Lyngdoh said that the AWNE was invited by the government of Nagaland to participate in the rally as part of the closing ceremony of the Hornbill Festival celebrated annually in Nagaland. The WWII jeeps will travel a distance of 70 kilometers by road from Dimapur to Kohima.
The rally will commemorate all the brave souls who died and the jeeps which were instrumental during the World War II while sending a message to show how futile war is, said Prof W Passah, member of the AWNE said. "The rally is not to glorify war, but to remember the people who died for value of peace and democracy," Lyngdoh, who owns a number of antique vehicles, said.
Lyngdoh said during World War II, there were three significant machines which aided the forces. These were the landing craft, transport aircraft, and the jeep.
"Had it not been for the jeeps, the Allies would have never won the war," Passah, who owns a Willys MB. During World War II, the Battle of Kohima was a turning point for the Japanese offensive into India in 1944.
