    Spin-test awaits Canada

Zimbabwe is clear about testing Canada using spin in a Group ‘A' league game on Monday.

Left-arm spinner Raymond Price, off-spinner Prosper Utseya and leg-spinner Graeme Cremer will try their tricks on a different group of batsmen. They bowled well against the mighty Aussies in the first game.

Canada views the contest as a must-win situation, elevating the sideshow at the Vidarbha CA Stadium to an absorbing contest.

Elton Chigumbura and mates focused on fielding and catching drills and the carpet-like outfield is suited to the Zimbabwe type of action-packed cricket.

“We will stick to spin and wish to play our best cricket against Canada. We bowled and fielded well in the first game (versus Australia), just that in the final overs our batting did not click.”

Zimbabwe's captain is just 25 away from 2500 runs in ODIs, Brendon Taylor has figured in 113 ODIs, Charles Coventry is credited with an unbeaten 194 off 191 balls in one-dayers (vs Bangladesh in 2009).

    Onus on Chigumbara

The VCA track is firm and conducive for strokeplay, as Ryan ten Doeschate and Shane Watson showed in the two WC games played so far. Chigumbura is reputed for clean hitting, sixes being his speciality.

John Davison of Canada held the record for fastest ton in WC history (67 balls), till Matthew Hayden bettered the feat in WC 2007. Canada captain Ashish Bagai, asked about World Cup competitions in empty stadium when minor teams are involved, said: “We are not used to playing in front of big crowds anyway. The first match against Sri Lanka was played in front of packed stands, what more can we ask for.”

The squad is a collection of players born in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uganda and Australia. Canada owns the dubious record of two lowest WC totals (45 vs England in WC 1979, 36 vs Sri Lanka in WC 2003. Will Nagpur see a new high or new low?
