    Afridi apologises for WC defeat

Mohali, Mar 31(ANI): Pakistan limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi has apologised to his nation for losing the crucial 2011 World Cup semi-final to archrivals India and subsequently, getting ousted from the tournament.

Afridi also congratulated India for qualifying for the World Cup final to be played against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2.

"I would like to congratulate the Indian team and the whole (Indian) nation for this victory. I wish them all the best for the final," Samaa TV quoted Afridi, as saying.

"At the same time, I want to say sorry to my nation. We tried our level best but couldn't make it," he added.

Despite the seminal loss to the archrivals, Afridi expressed satisfaction over the performance displayed by his players throughout the mega event.

"I am pleased with the way my team played throughout the competition," he maintained.

Though the target set by India was not very high, it was the lack of good partnerships coupled with some irresponsible shots played by Pakistan batsmen that led the visiting team to a deplorable loss, regretted Afridi.

Commending the Indian display, the Pakistani skipper said: "Wahab (Riaz) bowled quite well, but batting was a great miss for the Pakistani side. There were no partnerships at all and we played some irresponsible shots. Overall, India were better side today."

Afridi also defended his controversial decision of taking the 'batting power play' in the last five overs when Pakistan were at a score at 200 for eight, saying that they wanted to take it after seeing off Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh's spell.

"We thought of taking it after Harbhajan finished his spell. The idea was to take the power-play towards to the end of the innings," he said. (ANI)
