Rain forces RCB, Royals to split points

Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals shared points with not a single ball bowled after inclement weather forced the abandonment of their IPL encounter at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Tuesday.

The match was officially called off at 10:45 p.m. after on-field umpires Rudi Koertzen and Billy Doctrove decided that even the minimum five-overs-a-side game could not commence before 11:20 p.m.

At one point, however, it appeared that the match would eventually get underway, after a two-and-half-hour delay, when the rain briefly stopped. Play was scheduled to commence at 10:30 p.m., with the game reduced to 12 overs per side.

Just as the two captains emerged for the toss, though, the heavens opened up again, fatally scuppering the possibility of any cricket.

Earlier in the evening, light thundershowers ensured the ground remained covered, with a regular start clearly out of the question. Large sections of the stadium were empty, but the gallery remained occupied, a few thousand devout fans standing with fierce disregard for overhead conditions.

Organisers strove to keep them entertained, distributing flags and placards. Venkatesh Prasad and Rajasthan Royals' captain Shane Warne strolled out, to huge cheers.

The latter was seen in conversation with Rahul Dravid and counterpart Daniel Vettori, and later Vijay Mallya. Cameras also picked out Elizabeth Hurley, seated in one of the boxes adjacent to the pavilion. An inspection at 9 p.m. offered some hope of action, but the respite from the rain proved to be only momentary.

    Royals moves up

RCB climbed out of the bottom of the table with the point, moving to seventh ahead of Delhi Daredevils, and will now travel to Kolkata to face KKR on Friday. Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, leapfrogged a whole bunch of teams to move into second place.

The side will next fly to Mohali, where it will take on Kings XI Punjab on Thursday. This was the fourth washout in IPL history, after DD vs KKR at Delhi in 2008, MI vs RR at Durban in 2009, and CSK vs KKR at Cape Town in the same year.
