His team might have benefited in the final analysis but Kochi Tuskers Kerala captain Mahela Jayawardene still wants a review of the Duckworth/Lewis system for rain-truncated matches, saying it was time to see if it was good enough to be used in Twenty20 and ODIs.
“It has to be reviewed. Duckworth/Lewis is a method, which they came up for ODIs. To my limited knowledge, they do take an average score to make that formula. I think it is somewhere around 230 or 240. So once you take an average score like that and apply that in Twenty20s, the whole thing is different,” Jayawardene said after the seven-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in a rain-affected IPL match on Monday night.
“You start from a 50-over match and then you start with 20-over match or 18-over game or 17-over game and you work backwards. So that average score is something you really need to look at. “It is tough. But we need that sort of a calculation for situations like this. It is not easy. But there is room for improvement in all areas,” he added.
“We are heading in the right direction beating MI and CSK, which are huge wins. We got a lot of positives. We have to be consistent for period of time. We have to work hard,” he said.
An area of concern was bowling but Jayawardene said all the weaknesses would be sorted out soon.
“I am being critical, but we still have to improve. We dropped a few catches. It was not easy as it was slippery after the rains. But no excuses. We still keep working hard as in a tournament like this; we have to ensure not to be complacent. Improve on little things and that is important,” Jaywardene said.
The Sri Lankan also lavished praise on Brendon McCullum for his consistently good show with the bat.
“Brendon battled really well. He had said the other day that he wanted to be consistent. I think that he is doing that and working really hard in practises and it is brilliant the way he batted today with the freedom that he wanted,” he said.
Asked if he did the right thing by ignoring pacer Sreesanth and batsman VVS Laxman, Jayawardene said, “As long as we can, we need to go ahead with different combinations against different oppositions and conditions, the wicket everything comes into play. So it is important that we make the right call. Sometimes, we make changes; it may not work for us.
