The Carlton Blues won for the first time in 18 years in Sydney, beating the Swans 12.15 (87) to 10.11 (71) on a rain-soaked ground to stay among the top four in the Australian Football League.
Carlton captain Chris Judd starred with 15 clearances, 33 possessions and eight tackles as the Blues improved to four wins in six matches along with a draw.
Defending premiers and first-place Collingwood were scheduled to play the Western Bulldogs later Sunday in an attempt to go to 6-0. Geelong, also unbeaten this season with five straight wins, had a weekend bye.
Carlton coach Brett Ratten said Judd was the key to his side's victory.
"There's no doubt about it, his work-rate the whole game was just fantastic," Ratten said. "That's why he's a champion of the game."
On Sunday, Essendon returned the first-year Gold Coast team back to reality, a week after the new side's first win, overwhelming the Suns 31.11 (197) to 8.10 (58).
The Bombers led 15.4 (94) to 0.1 (1) after the first quarter; a league record for points scored in the opening term. The only team to score more points in any quarter in an AFL match was 92 years ago: South Melbourne piled on 106 points in the fourth quarter against St. Kilda in 1919.
The Bombers had 13 individual goalkickers, including Kyle Reimers with a career-best eight.
North Melbourne posted its first win of the season, pulling clear in the second half to beat Port Adelaide by 60 points. Ruckman Todd Goldstein and midfielder Andrew Swallow led the Kangaroos in their 18.25 (133) to 10.13 (73) win.
Richmond defeated Brisbane 18.16 (124) to 14.14 (98), leaving the Lions winless this season and bottom of the standings. Adelaide downed St. Kilda 13.12 (90) to 9.17 (71) to notch its first victory of 2011.
On Thursday, West Coast kicked five goals in the first quarter while holding Melbourne goalless and went on to beat the Demons 15.16 (106) to 6.16 (52).
