Athletics season begins with Indian GP tomorrow

Patiala, May 2 (PTI) The athletics season begins with the first leg of the Indian Grand Prix here tomorrow with a host of the country''s top athletes set to be in action with the World Championships and 2012 London Olympics berths up for grabs.

Most of the campers at the National Institute of Sports here are set to take part in the first of the two-leg Indian Grand Prix series though a few have opted out due to injury-related issues.

The meet will have 16 disciplines, eight each in men''s and women''s sections.

Track events comprise of 100m, 400m, 800m, 110m Hurdles in both men''s and women''s sections while the field events would be made up of high jump, long jump, triple jump and discus throw.

Other track and field events will be held in the second leg of the series at the same venue on May 7.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist discus thrower Krishna Poonia has decided to skip the meet as she does not want to take risk as she is recovering from her knee injury.

"The Asian Championships (July 7-10 in Japan) and World Championships (August 27-September 4 in Korea) are important events this season, so we would be focussing on these this year. She did not want to take risk as she is yet to be 100 per cent fit," Poonia''s husband Virender said.

National record holder triple jumper Renjith Maheswary is also not taking part in the meet tomorrow as he had started training recently.

"I have just started training at Bangalore SAI Centre and I am skipping the Indian Grand Prix. I am shifting my training base to NIS Patiala. My focus is on the Asian Championships and World Championships.

The men''s 100m race would, however, see top runners taking part with the likes of Abdul Najeeb Qureshi, Sameer Mon and Hemant Kirulkar. Qureshi had equalled the national record of 10.30secs in the Commonwealth Games last year.

The women''s 400m race will also see tough competition among Juana Murmu, Mandeep Kaur and Sini Jose.

The athletes will have their first chance to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics and for the World Championships in Korea (August 27-September 4).

The athletes will also have a chance to stake their claim to represent the country in the three legs of Asian Grand Prix to be held in China on May 22, 26 and 29.

Athletics Federation of India has extended invitation to all its state units and Boards to send their athletes at the meet.
