Shahid Afridi has been replaced as Pakistan captain by Misbah-ul-Haq for the two one-day internationals against Ireland later this month.
Afridi led Pakistan to the semifinals of the World Cup and his team also clinched the five-match ODI series against West Indies 3-2 earlier this month.
However, he caused a stir by criticizing team management on his return home from the West Indies and has been asked by the Pakistan Cricket Board to explain his remarks.
PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar played down Afridi's demotion and told The Associated Press that it is the "policy of the board to appoint a captain on a series to series basis."
Afridi became Pakistan's fourth ODI captain in less than two years after Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf when he led the team in the Asia Cup last year.
Afridi and Khan both were named in the 16-member squad to play the two ODIs against Ireland on May 28 and May 30 in Belfast.
Without naming a team official Afridi had said he was unhappy with interference in team affairs during the tour of the West Indies.
The PCB said Afridi had violated its code of conduct and appropriate action will be taken after the submission of the tour report at the conclusion of the West Indies tour.
