Two from Bengal scale Mount Everest

Kolkata, May 21 (PTI) Two mountaineers from West Bengal climbed Mount Everest today, a day after two other mountaineers from the state scaled Mount Kanchenjunga.

Rajib Bhattacharyya (38) reached the 8,848-metre summit at 9.55 am IST while fellow climber Dipankar Ghosh (45) followed suit at 11.20 am IST, Manab Lahiri, secretary of an adventure club ''Angan Chhariye'' told PTI.

While Rajib represented the Angan Chhariya Adventure club, Dipankar represented Bhadrakali Padatik Mountaineering club, based in Hooghly district of West Bengal.

Young trainees of Angan Chhariye, who are school children, came forward with their pocket money to support the expedition, Manab Lahiri said.

Accompanied by sherpas Purba and Karma, the two-member team reached the top through the south ridge of the Nepal Himalayas.

Dipankar, who has been climbing Himalayas since 1992, and Rajib, having over 12 years of mountaineering experience, became the third and fourth civilian mountaineer from the state respectively to reach Mt Everest, Lahiri said.

They followed Debasish Biswas and Basanta Singharoy, who climbed Mt Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world and the highest in India, yesterday.

Satyabrata Dam, working in the Indian Navy, climbed Mt Everest in 2004 to become the first person from the state to have achieved the feat.

Successful summit campaigns of Dipankar and Rajib include Mt Kedardome (6830m), Mt Gangotri I (6672m), Mt Bhagirathi-II (6512m) and Mt Papsura (6451m).
