CARDIFF (Reuters) - Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan won the toss and opted to bat in the first test against England on Thursday.
The start was delayed by more than three hours because of rain and another downpour followed just after the toss.
England omitted pace bowler Steven Finn while Eoin Morgan will bat at six in place of Paul Collingwood, who has retired.
Sri Lanka were forced to leave out fast bowler Dilhara Fernando because of a sore knee. Seamer Suranga Lakmal took his place in a five-man attack.
Dilshan also drafted off-spinner Ajantha Mendis into the team after stating he was not in the 12-man squad the previous day.
The opening game of the three-match series is the first test for both teams since January following England's triumphant Ashes series win in Australia.
Sri Lanka were beaten by India in the World Cup final on April 2 after defeating England by 10 wickets in the quarter-finals.
