WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Lions flanker Michael Rhodes has been banned for six weeks for making a dangerous tackle on Otago Highlanders winger Siale Piutau during last Friday's Super 15 rugby match in Dunedin.
Rhodes appeared at a hearing on Tuesday and was suspended by judicial officer Nick Davidson, who found that Rhodes' wrestling tackle on Piutau at a ruck placed the winger "at serious risk of injury."
Piutau was cited for punching Rhodes in retaliation but escaped suspension. Davidson said Piutau had acted in "exceptional circumstances" and his reaction was that of someone who had been "seriously endangered."
Rhodes' ban rules him out of the Johannesburg-based Lions' remaining matches against Wellington and the Sharks.
