Kolkata, Jun 3 (PTI) In order to ensure that she does not migrate to some other state, the West Bengal government today gave Rs 5 lakh as financial assistance to ace heptathlete Susmita Singha Roy today.
The West Bengal government''s move came after Susmita had expressed her desire to shift base to Jharkhand to prepare for the 2012 London Olympics.
State Sports Minister Madan Mitra today called on Susmita along with her coach to the Writers'' Buildings and requested her to change her mind.
"I have read in newspapers that she (Susmita) wanted to leave Bengal. Immediately, I got in touch with her family and asked her to remain in the state and gave her a financial support of Rs 5 lakh," Mitra told reporters.
"She is Bengal''s pride and we would ensure that our stars represent the state. We would also ensure that all athletes who have migrated to other states return to West Bengal. Bengal is calling you," he said.
In the Guangzhou Asian Games last year, Susmita finished fourth behind bronze medallist Pramila Ganapathy from Bangalore.
