Hurricanes beat Lions 38-27 in Super 15

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Former All Blacks winger Hosea Gear scored two tries as the Wellington Hurricanes rallied from 20-8 down in the first half to beat South Africa's Lions 38-27 in Super 15 rugby on Saturday.

All Blacks Aaron Cruden and Ma'a Nonu also contributed to the win, which was the Hurricanes' fifth from 13 matches this season but still leaves them without a chance of reaching the playoffs.

Cruden scored a first-half try among 23 points and Nonu scored a second-half try which revived his hopes of All Blacks World Cup selection in an ongoing battle with new star Sonny Bill Williams.

Nonu also provided the last pass in both of Gear's tries and Cruden was instrumental in an improved Hurricanes attacking performance.
