Sarwan, Simmons help West Indies set 241-run target for India

Port of Spain, June 8 (IANS) The West Indies middle-order failed to capitalise on the foundation laid by Lendl Simmons (53) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (56) and were restricted to 240 for nine in the second One-day International against India here Wednesday.

Though it was an improvement from the their 214 in the first ODI, the West Indies looked set for a 250 plus total when they were 192 for three at the end of the 41st over and a set Sarwan at the crease.

But that was when the script went awry as four batsmen, including Sarwan, fell within 5 runs and the home team was left struggling at 197/7 with 38 balls remaining. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra did the maximum damage for India, picking up four wickets for 31 runs in what was the best performance of his ODI career till date.

Captain Darren Sammy (22), along with Ravi Rampaul (14), added 31 valuable runs towards the end and lent respectability to the final score.

The West Indies, put to bat, were off to a solid start with Simmons and Kirk Edwards (25) forging a 57-run stand for the first wicket.

Simmons and Sarwan carried on after Edwards was caught behind off Mishra, adding another 67 runs to the total. They took their time on a slow wicket and scored runs with a strike rate in the early 60s.

Sarwan, who had admitted to not being fluent in his 56-run knock in the last match here, took four balls less to make the same number of runs. Edwards consumed 84 balls in his innings, hitting three fours and a boundary.

Both Simmons and Sarwan toiled hard on a difficult pitch but ensured the West Indies got to a decent score despite a mid-innings collapse.
