Latest from Sports - Tainted Bhanot remains AFI secretary

New Delhi, Jun 17 (PTI) Lalit Bhanot, who is lodged in Tihar Jail on charges of corruption related to the Commonwealth Games scam, remained as Secretary of the Athletics Federation of India in the absence any opposition.

The Annual General Meeting of the AFI today decided to retain Ravinder Chowdhury, who was made acting secretary before the Commonwealth Game last year, in the same post.

"AFI secretary can be removed if he himself resigns or there is a no-confidence motion against him. In the absence of these, Bhanot remains the AFI Secretary," a top AFI official, who attended the AGM here, told PTI.

The AGM approved the appointment of Kripal Singh by the executive committee last month as the treasurer of AFI.

It also made a minor change in the athletics calendar with National Open Athletics now being scheduled in Kolkata from September 10-13. It was earlier scheduled to be held in Ranchi from September 22-25.

The AGM also finalised foreign training stints for athletes in some disciplines, apart from taking stock of the foreign coaches who would be part of the preparations for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Walking race coach Alexander Artsybashev of Russia has reached the country and will be joining the National Institute of Sports, Patiala tomorrow. Another coach, Shvilli Evegene of Uzbekistan, who will look after jumps, will join on Monday. PTI PDS SSC
