Bridgetown (Barbados), June 29 (PTI) Ishant Sharma dealt two quick blows to the hosts before Marlon Samuels and Shivnarine Chanderpaul joined forces to take West Indies to 98 for five at tea on the rain-hit second day of the second cricket Test against India here Wednesday.
Early tea was taken as officials struggled to make the Kensington Oval ground match-fit after a heavy spell of showers in the afternoon.
So far, there have been three stoppages due to rain on the second day''s play and only 25.3 overs of play has been possible.
West India, 30 for 3 overnight, have added 68 runs in this spell of play, for the loss of Ramnaresh Sarwan (18) and Devendra Bishoo (13).
Chanderpaul is unbeaten on 20 while Marlon Samuels is giving him company on 21. They kept the Indians at bay for about 20 overs as they defied the ferocious Indian fast bowling trio, led by young Ishant.
The two batsmen ensured that the hosts do not suffer any damage further after losing both the overnight batsmen -- Bishoo and Sarwan to a brilliant spell by gangly Ishant in curtailed morning session.
Chanderpaul and Samuels have shared 41 runs for the unconquered sixth-wicket stand between them. They scored runs at snail''s pace but were, importantly, successful in protecting their wickets.
Earlier, Ishant struck twice as India reduced West Indies to 82 for five at lunch. Both Sarwan and Bishoo fell prey to Ishant''s bounce as he bowled a spell of 6-2-23-2 this morning.
