SYDNEY (AP) — Halfback Ryan Stig scored one try and set up another as Newcastle beat St. George Illawarra 14-10 on Sunday in Australia's National Rugby League.
Veteran Reece Simmonds scored two tries for the Dragons in a losing cause.
In other matches in the 17th round, Cronulla beat South Sydney 26-4, Penrith downed the Canterbury Bulldogs 20-6 with Travis Burns scoring 16 of the winner's points, and Brisbane defeated Parramatta 16-12 thanks to Matt Gillett's try with five minutes left.
The Sydney Roosters will play Canberra on Monday.
Leaders Melbourne and second-placed Manly were among six teams with byes due to Wednesday's third and deciding State of Origin match between Queensland and New South Wales.
Penrith's win over Canterbury saw the Panthers replacing the Bulldogs slipping out of the top eight. The New Zealand Warriors and Wests Tigers also move ahead of the Bulldogs after receiving two points from byes.
"We worked our way into the game and we had plenty of field position at various stages of the game, but we just failed to put any real penetration and put the defense under too much pressure," Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore said.
