MADRID (Reuters) - Madrid's mayor has called a news conference on Wednesday to make an Olympics-related announcement as local media reported the city was set to unveil a bid for the 2020 summer Games.
Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon and spokesmen for the two main political parties would outline a proposition they will then present to the city legislators on July 20, Ruiz-Gallardon's office said in a statement.
They did not provide details and were not immediately available for comment.
Spanish media reported without identifying the source of their information that Madrid was planning to make a third bid to host a summer Games after failed efforts to secure the 2012 and 2016 editions.
So far only Italian capital Rome has been officially confirmed as a candidate for 2020, with the deadline for announcing bids set for Sept. 1.
A senior International Olympic Committee (IOC) member said last week Istanbul would be trying for a fifth time to host a summer Olympics since their first attempt for the 2000 Games.
Among the other cities reported to be close to bidding is Japan's capital Tokyo. South Africa's Durban could also lodge a bid despite the government's initial decision to quash the idea.
A decision on the 2020 host will be taken in 2013.
