NAGOYA, Japan (AP) — Veteran ozeki Kaio beat Mongolia's Kyokutenho on Thursday to set a new record for the most wins in the history of sumo wrestling.
Kaio forced Kyokutenho out over the edge at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament to record his 1,046th career win, surpassing former grand champion Chiyonofuji.
Kaio's win is a welcome outcome as sumo struggles to overcome a bout-fixing scandal that shut Japan's ancient sport down for six months.
A total of 25 sumo wrestlers and coaches were expelled from the sport after it was learned they were involved in throwing matches.
The 39-year-old Kaio began his sumo career in 1988.
