SYDNEY (AP) — Queensland Reds winger Rod Davies will make his rugby test debut for Australia against Samoa on Sunday after being named as a replacement for James O'Connor, who strained a hamstring in training.
The 22-year-old Davies had an outstanding Super 15 season with the championship-winning Reds and is now one of three test debutants in the Wallabies lineup, joining scrumhalf Nick Phipps and lock Sitaleki Timani.
O'Connor was forced to withdraw from the Australian lineup when he was injured in training on Friday. The seriousness of his injury has yet to be determined but a team spokesman said he would be assessed by medical staff over the next few days.
Veteran flyhalf Matt Giteau will take over the goalkicking duties in O'Connor's absence.
