The availability of Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar for the Champions League Twenty20 is uncertain due to his toe injury but coach Robin Singh today insisted that the veteran batsman’s absence would not hurt the team much.
Robin refused to say whether Tendulkar, whose injury flared up during the just-concluded disastrous tour of England, would play in the Champions League starting with the qualifiers from September 19.
“Harbhajan is definitely available but if Sachin is not available, it will not affect the team greatly and it will be an opportunity for others to prove their mettle,” Robin told reporters here.
Asked about the team’s preparedness, Robin said, “The same set of qualities that we have displayed during our earlier matches in the IPL will count.”
“We are fairly well-prepared. We had a camp in Bangalore before reaching here. The Bangalore camp was very beneficial and the players were able to gel together,” he added.
T&T is in race: Ganga
Hyderabad: Finalists in the 2009 edition, Trinidad and Tobago is aiming to go one better and lift the trophy at the CLTwenty20 starting here with the qualifying matches from September 19.
“If we can go one step further to what we did in 2009, it is a great feeling. This is probably a big stage, where we play as a national team. It is important for us to recognise that and try to give it our best,” T&T captain Darren Ganga said.
“At the end of the day, it is an opportunity for the young players to enhance their reputations, probably to get into the West Indies side and an IPL team. There is everything to play for,” he added.
Ganga said his team would try to do things differently in the CLT20 this year.
“Obviously, we cannot be predictable. So, there are going to be a few things we will do differently. I don’t want to share that with you. We want to keep it as a surprise to our oppositions. Hopefully, we can start well and bring lot of joy to the spectators,” he said.
‘Learnt a lot from Dravid’
Kolkata: Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait, who shared the Rajasthan Royals dressing room with Rahul Dravid in the last edition of IPL, said that he learnt a lot from the Indian batting star who bid adieu to ODI cricket in England on Friday.
“It was really good to have him in the Rajasthan Royals squad. We have learnt a lot from him. He may be known as a Test specialist, but he showed that he can play the Twenty20 format as well,” Tait said, lauding Dravid’s mental toughness.
The Big Bash champions South Australia Redbacks will take on Warriors of South Africa in their CLT20 opener at the Eden Gardens on September 25.
Having lost out in the semi-finals last year, Redbacks are banking largely on Shaun Tait’s scorching pace in the upcoming Champions League Twenty20 which starts on Monday.
Coach Darren Berry, who arrived with a 16-member squad, was confident that the team’s pre-season had been solid and he expected the team to progress deep into the tournament. “Our preparation has been outstanding, we have had every opportunity to prepare, but there are some really good sides in this competition,” Berry said. The Redbacks beat New South Wales in February to win Big Bash Twenty20 in the Australia domestic season.
