Railways get 3 points in high-scoring draw
The score read 519 with eight Railways wickets down and still needing 3 runs to overhaul Rajasthan’s 521, but the shot that followed was more than a boundary as it made history of sorts.
M Suresh, who was batting on fifty, backfoot punched a delivery just outside off-stump from Vivek Yadav to the boundary triggering a big celebration in the Railways’ home ground, Karnail Singh stadium here on Sunday.
The jubilation was about three firsts this season: Railways taking first innings lead, match going into the fourth day at the Karnail Singh stadium, first time this season, and Railways scoring 500 runs after almost six seasons.
Earlier, Railways wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat played a positive innings of 145 runs with valiant support from veteran Yere Goud, who made 70 runs facing 257 deliveries and stood like a rock.
The overnight duo of Rawat (26) and Goud (35) started the proceedings for the hosts. They took couple of overs to settle down and find their feet. Once they were settled, it was all about struggle for the Rajasthan bowlers.
Rawat started from where he had left on Saturday playing shots all around the park. He made his intention clear from the outset by hooking and pulling fast bowlers to the boundary while late cuts to slow bowlers were a treat to watch.
While Rawat looked to score runs as quickly as possible, his partner Goud played perfect foil to him. In his 145-run innings, Rawat sent the ball to the fence 21 times. The 153-run stand between the two ended as Goud edged a Sumit Mathur delivery to wicketkeeper Rohit Jhalani after the lunch session.
Then Rawat forged a 90-run partnership with Marripuri Suresh, who supported him well. And, when Rawat played straight into the hands of substitute fielder Deepak Chahar off Vivek Yadav in the 151st over, the scoreboard read 489 and the hosts still required 32 runs to take first innings lead with four wickets in hand.
Then, Vivek tested the Railways batsmen and they giving away two quick wickets while adding just 26 runs to the total.
Finally, Suresh with his determined knock of unbeaten 61 ensured that his team got three points. And right after taking the lead Railways declared the innings on 525 for eight.
Though it was just a formality, Railways came to bowl to give some confidence to their bowlers. But it turned out to be far more successful than anyone had expected as the Railways bowlers claimed four wickets at the score of 20.
After that, with no result possible, umpires called the game off after consulting both the captains.
Ashok Menaria, who scored 230 in the first innings and Anureet for his 7 wicket-haul in the match were adjudged Man of the Match.
