Final meeting to decide supreme hockey authority

Final meeting to decide supreme hockey authority

With the deadline to decide the governing body for hockey having expired on Friday, the three-member committee will now meet on Wednesday.

Vice-President of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) GS Mander-headed three-member committee had been asked to reach a verdict on who runs the sport that is being marred by tumultuous war between two Hockey India (HI) and Indian Hockey Federation IHF).

The committee, formed by the IOA under the aegis of Federation of International Hockey (FIH) to bring an end to the imbroglio of power struggle, includes Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI) chief Birendra Prasad Baishya and the Handball Federation of India (HFI) Secretary General SM Bali.

Earlier, the deadline to present a solution was August 31, but since the committee could not reach a verdict, it will meet on Wednesday afternoon now.

“We will be convening a meeting with both the bodies tomorrow evening. This will be the final meeting to reach the verdict. Then, we will send our report to the IOA and in consideration with the FIH, we will have a result,” Mander, former President of the Wrestling Federation of India, told The Pioneer.

On the reason behind the delay, Mander said, “IHF had sought extension of the deadline, which was given to them.”

Also, on the criticism that the committee is facing from various quarters, including the IHF, for not being independent enough as they are the ones who were in the IOA when it disbanded the IHF and replaced it with the HI in 2008, Mander said, “I don't want to speak regarding this. They have their own say. We have been asked to do our duty. We will file our reports. It is their right to say anything.”

However, Mander refused to comment on what will be the main link on which the meeting will be held.
