dear friend, it depends on which windows version you wana install
any way i assume its windows xp PROFESSIONAL...(set up will be similar to other xp versions also)
i also take that you have a bootable winxp cd also.
1) firstly you have to change booting sequence in the cmos, for that you have to press the cmos setup key during the start up(it may be DEL or CTRL+ALT+ESC, which depends on the type of pc you have and it is shown during the start up in the screen also).
so go to the cmos setup-->BIOS FEATURES SETUP--->and change the ""first boot device" to a cd rom and restart your pc with xp cd loaded.
2) when the pc reads the cd it will ask you to""press any key if you wish to boot from the cd"" and you have to do as said to boot from the cd and install windows xp from it.......else the previous version of windows in your pc will run as normal.
when you press any key
then the screen will show ""setup is checking ......""like that some thing
and the screen will turn blue in color and will show some thing intially during which you have to wait....
3)after some time it will show ""welcome to setup""
it will show the options available there which are easily understandable for all
just go through the messages given on screen for a good understanding
if you wish to install a new windows xp you have to press ""ENTER KEY""
there is a white border in the bottom of the blue screen which will show the options you can do, this will be much easy for you to do...
4) next it will ask you to press F8 if you agree the end user license agreement
so you press F8
5) then it will ask you whether you wish to install a fresh copy , for that you have to press ""ESC KEY""
6) then comes another screen showing the various partitions in your pc which are recognised by windows...
you should first select the partition in which you wish to install the fresh copy of windows and press ""ENTER KEY''''
7)then it will ask you to press the alphabet """C"" to confirm that you wana install in the previously selected partition itself...so press c
8) now it will ask you to select the type of formating you wish to perform on the partition you selected for the installation of windows...
here you can choose to do a quick or normal format...( the difference is the time taken to complete the process )
and you can select the NTFS or FAT partition table ...
these two depends on your choice...
so if your partition is previously FAT32... then you can select the option to format using fat file system...
NTFS FILE system offers a better security and other option but if you are not using it on a network and so you can use a fat file system itself.
the windows 98 wont work in ntfs so in future if you ever wish to install 98 you have to again change the ntfs to fat and all...so its better to go with the fat file system itself....
(you dont have to confuse with this... but personally im using a fat file system only)
so select the type of format and press enter key
9) then it will ask you to press alphabet""F"" to confirm the format
soon after this it will format the partition and starts copying the files for the installation of the windows xp to your hard drive and all...
it will restart after this completion
this time also the pc will ask you to press any key to boot from the cd, but you dont have to press any keys as the files are already copied to the hard drive..
then the windows ""graphics"" screen will appear and it will show the
progress of the installation and all
it will soon ask for the WINDOWS PRODUCT KEY ,administrator name ,password, time and date....which you can fill easily( i cant explain alll that because for that i have to go again through the installatioon on my pc, but those are easy for you to take decision so dont worry)
it will restart again(mostly) and will ask for some other info
like the user name,do you have internet connection
""do you wana register your version of windows ""which you can do later also, so skip that step...then your windows installtion will be complete and is ready for use...
dont forget to format the other drives also before using , so that the virus in those drives are also removed...
then load some good antivirus and other softwares and do you job....
hope my notes helpe d you rather than leaving you more confused....
take care and reply me after done....
