Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. offered remedies to the European Union in a bid to win antitrust approval to buy McAfee Inc., its largest acquisition and one which will add security software to its chip-making arsenal, regulators said.
The European Commission, the 27-nation EU’s antitrust authority, will extend the deadline to rule on the deal to Jan. 26, from an earlier deadline of Jan. 12, it said in a statement on its website.
Intel, the world’s biggest chipmaker, is counting on McAfee to help it add security measures to its semiconductors for computers, smartphones and other devices.
“We are continuing to work with the commission,” Chuck Mulloy, a spokesman for the Santa Clara, California-based company, said in a phone interview yesterday. “We continue to expect closing the transaction in the first half of 2011.”
