Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. said President Bob Muglia, head of the software maker’s server and tools division, will leave this summer because Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer decided the unit needed new leadership.
Muglia, a 23-year veteran, will run the group while Microsoft conducts a search for his replacement, Ballmer said in an e-mail posted on the Redmond, Washington-based company’s website.
The business, which generated sales of $14.9 billion in the most recent fiscal year, includes database software, Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing programs and a version of Windows for running corporate networks. Ballmer said the unit needs to accelerate growth and that requires a new executive team. Muglia is the fourth senior manager to announce his departure from Microsoft since May.
“All businesses go through cycles and need new and different talent to manage through those cycles,” Ballmer said in the message. He said he chose this time for the switch because “the best time to think about change is when you are in a position of strength.”
Muglia took over the division in October 2005. The business’s revenue rose more than 50 percent under his leadership. It accounted for 24 percent of Microsoft’s total sales in the fiscal year ended in June, making it the third- largest division.
Dawn Beauparlant, a spokeswoman for Microsoft, said Muglia wasn’t available for an interview.
Shares of Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, fell 38 cents to $28.22 at 1:32 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The stock declined 8.4 percent last year.
