The BBC iPlayer app for the iPad will be released this Thursday. It has been years in the making (Gadget Lab first reported on a planned iPhone app in February 2008), but now BBC iPlayer engineer Geoff Marshall has made it all but official. Here’s his Tweet:
iPlayer App for iPad is being released this Thursday – 10th Feb. 3G connection is browse only. Browse+Playback requires Wi-Fi. #iplayer
The iPlayer is the BBC’s online “DVR”. Only available in the UK, it lets viewers watch the last seven days worth of shows on demand in a browser. As we saw back in December, an international iPad app – which would let anyone stream the shows – will be subscription-based with a monthly fee like Hulu. The international version was not due until the middle of this year, so it seems likely that Thursday’s launch will be UK-only. The BBC is forbidden from charging for its content in the UK and is instead funded by a compulsory license fee.
If it has full access to the entire week’s catalog, the app should be a winner. But hurry up and roll it out to the whole world, BBC. And remember, there are plenty of other places to get your shows already.
