Apple may turn MobileMe into digital shelves for iTunes users to store their digital books, songs and music.
Apple is considering a plan to turn MobileMe, an online storage locker that currently enables users to store calendars, address books, and e-mail, into an entertainment and media hub as well, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
If iTunes were to proceed with such a plan, any user with a Web-connected device would likely be enabled to access their digital songs and movies from Apple's servers. This is the promise of the cloud computing. Computing done over the Internet is commonly referred to as "the cloud" and this is where the next generation of digital entertainment is supposedly headed.
Early last year, sources in the film and music industries told CNET that iTunes executives had discussed building a cloud service. Since then, Apple hasn't gone very far in licensing for the cloud, the people familiar with the talks said.
