Troubled Qtrax is back and licensing music

Qtrax, the music company once sought to create a legal file-sharing music service, has finally struck several music licensing agreements, according to a source with knowledge of the deals.

Details about the deals are scant but apparently they are very limited and it wasn't clear what markets Qtrax will be available. At Qtrax.com is a note that that reads: "The new Qtrax coming soon. Stay tuned." A company representative was not immediately available for comment.

To call Qtrax long suffering is to understate the history of the once-financially troubled company.

Qtrax is most famous for throwing a huge party in Europe three years ago to celebrate the launch of its service and the company's CEO boasted that he had struck licensing deals with all of the top labels, only to watch label execs deny that any such agreements with Qtrax existed.

Since then, Qtrax managers generated a few headlines for promising to launch and failing to meet the self-imposed deadlines. The company's prospects of ever getting off the ground looked almost nonexistent after it started bouncing checks and getting sued by several of its vendors, including Oracle, for failing to pay.

    More to come
