DoS attack takes down Codero-hosted Web sites

Hosting provider Codero was working to get the Web sites of its customers back up this morning after a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack hit one of the company's upstream Internet providers.

"Upstream provider in PHX working to restore a BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) session they dropped and to mitigate a DDoS attack. Phone service is disrupted," Cordero's Twitter page said around 7:30 a.m. PT.

"We are experiencing network issues affecting part of our PHX data center," the company posted on Twitter a while later. "Engineers are working with upstream providers."

"Another attempt is now underway at routing traffic to specific segments of our network," Codero tweeted around 9:30 a.m. PT.

A reader who tipped us off to the outage says thousands of sites were affected, but we're still in the process of trying to confirm that number. Cordero, which has points of presence in Irvine, Calif.; Denver; Chicago; and Ashburn, Va., is migrating a data center from San Diego to Phoenix.

Representatives from Codero did not immediately return a phone message.
