Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Education has asked all schools for girls not to send their students outside the Kingdom for academic visits or programmes before obtaining an official approval from the ministry.
It said overseas trips for female students should be governed by certain regulations, including the adherence of such trips with Islamic principles and refraining from any moral violations.
Among other regulations, it cited that consideration should be placed on the privacy of female students and that should not mix with males. Photography, too, shall be prohibited.
In its bulletin, dispatched to all girls' schools in the Kingdom, the ministry said that while abroad, female students should be accompanied by an immediate female relative, should move in groups in public places, and drivers should be selected for them from among those who are judged to be "decent".
The ministry bulletin also noted that in order for female students to be taken abroad on trips organized by schools, written permission should be obtained from parents.
It added that female supervisors should accompany the students on all occasions. One supervisor shall be assigned to supervise every ten primary-level female students, while one supervisor would be assigned to supervise every 15 intermediate- and secondary- level female students, the bulletin said.
It added that if the number of female supervisors was not enough the overseas journey should be cancelled.
