World News - Thousands in march for train jobs

23 July 2011 Last updated at 06:30 ET Thousands of people have begun a march through Derby in support of train maker Bombardier.

The firm is planning to cut almost half of its 3,000 workforce after missing out on the £1.4bn Thameslink contract.

Bosses, unions and local politicians have called on the government to reconsider making the German company Siemens the preferred bidder.

Organisers claim the job losses will be a huge blow for the local economy and UK manufacturing as a whole.

Despite meeting with Derbyshire MPs earlier in the week David Cameron reiterated the government's position that it was legally bound by the terms of the tendering process and no U-turn was possible.

Offers to bring forward contracts for London Underground and the Crossrail project have been welcomed by Bombardier management but they emphasised the Thameslink work was the most important.

The march started at Bass' Recreation Ground and will move via the Cornmarket before a rally on Cathedral Green.
