    World News - Athlete denies attack on husband

    4 August 2011 Last updated at 09:06 ET Scottish athletics legend Liz McColgan has appeared in court accused of attacking her estranged husband before hurling his clothes out of a window.

    Ms McColgan, 47, is alleged to have repeatedly punched her husband Peter - who she separated from last year - on the head and body.

    It is also alleged that she prodded him on the body to his injury.

    The Commonwealth and Olympic medallist, of Carnoustie, Angus, denies all the charges.

    Arbroath Sheriff Court heard that the alleged assault on 12 July came just eight months after Ms McColgan announced the couple were to split "amicably".

    The track star is also accused of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear and alarm.

    Prosecutors said she shouted repeatedly before throwing Mr McColgan's clothes down the stairs of their Carnoustie home.

    Gold medal She is then alleged to have thrown clothes belonging to the former Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games athlete out of a window.

    Ms McColgan spoke only to confirm her name during the brief hearing.

    Defence lawyer Gary McIlravey asked the court to release Ms McColgan ahead of a trial without the requirement to be on bail.

    Sheriff Derek Pyle instead ordered Ms McColgan to stand trial on 21 November. She will also have to attend a pre-trial hearing on 1 November.

    Ms McColgan - previously Liz Lynch - shot to fame in the late 1980s - taking home Commonwealth Gold at the 1986 games in Edinburgh and Olympic silver at the 1988 Seoul games, both in the 10,000 metres.

    She went on to win gold in the same event at the 1991 World Championships.

    McColgan then repeated her Commonwealth success in the 1990 Auckland games - landing another gold.
