World News - Man held over police murder attempt

28 August 2011 Last updated at 10:12 ET A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of two police officers hit by a car during disorder in north-east London.

The two constables were chasing looters from a clothes shop when the vehicle hit them in Royston Avenue, Waltham Forest, on 8 August.

One suffered knee and leg wounds while the other received a shoulder injury. Both are said to be recovering at home.

Last week a man, 31, was bailed until September over the attack.

One officer was hit with such force by the Citroen vehicle - registration Y132 GHJ - that some of his body armour came off.

CCTV footage showed him lying in the middle of the road afterwards.

He and his colleague were knocked down at about 01:00 BST on the second of three consecutive nights of violence in the city.

Both men are usually based at Paddington Green police station in central London.

Across London as a whole, a total of 2,082 people have now been arrested over the disorder, with 1,191 of them - 57% - being charged.
