World News - Briton dies after fight in Cannes

20 September 2011 Last updated at 09:05 ET A British man has died after a fight broke out in the French Riviera resort of Cannes.

The 37-year-old, named by local police as Lee Elton Fischer from London, was understood to have hit his head on the pavement on Sunday and died instantly.

The Foreign Office said next of kin had been informed and consular assistance was being provided.

Three French men, aged between 25 and 30, were in police custody on suspicion of manslaughter.

A prosecutor from nearby Grasse has opened an investigation.

A local police spokesman said Mr Fischer appeared to have been hit several times in the face during the fight. He then fell awkwardly.

"It appears he was involved in an argument with three other men who work in the local area," the spokesman said.

"He died instantly and so he was not taken to hospital. We are as yet unsure what sparked the dispute."

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out.

Mr Fischer is understood to have been in Cannes to work at a trade exhibition organised by the Tax Free World Association.
