Taj Mahal retains its position amongst the new declared seven world wonders of the world. Having accrued the maximum number of votes in the global poll, Taj Mahal earned its place amongst the new seven wonders of the world.
The announcement of the new seven world wonders took place at Benfica Stadium in Lisbon on July 8, 2007 at 3:30 am. The Taj Mahal faced competition from twenty one other wonders of the world. Over 100 million votes were cast for the online poll.
The other six wonders of the world to attain their place in the famed list are the Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, the Statue of Christ Redeemer (Brazil), the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, Chichen Itza in Mexico and the Colosseum in Rome.
The next poll to be conducted is about the seven wonders of the nature.
The Swiss based NGO run by Businessman Bernard Weber had left no stone unturned to create a hysteria with their online campaign and in the process, had minted millions of dollars.
Not a single stone was left unturned to ensure that the grand finale was a media spectacle. Hollywood stars, dancers and singers, and even Bollywood starlet Bipasha Basu were all there to be a part of the mega extravaganza.
